Paraphrasing Chaim Soutine
Paraphrasing Chaim Soutine (1893-1943) was my way of connecting to the wisdom of his restless soul. To maintain the spirit of his work and his personality I kept away from refinement by applying paint using dirty rags and worn out brushes. The ragged confusion on the painting surface parallels the turmoil of Soutine’s anguished and sad life. Anxiety externalized and made visible is healing to me and probably was healing to Soutine, who appeared to be unsettled anywhere.
