Artist’s Note:
This work began as a paraphrase of a sketch by the Italian Renaissance artist Salviati for a Medici-commissioned tapestry. The original sketch is enigmatic. It is supposedly titled Joseph Sold into Egypt. But it is unclear which of the depicted figures is Joseph.
I was inspired by this enigmatic quality and created an ambiguous composition in which a human, a horse, and a cartoon meme are arranged in a choreographic dance. The youthful figure riding the horse could be a young woman or Joseph. I leave it up to the viewer to decide.
The horse is wise, yet not verbal. Its sad gaze meets the viewer’s; this is the artist’s appeal to the viewer in the hope of conveying something that is impossible to convey.
The entire work is constructed to create the sense of a flat Renaissance tapestry, which was not realized by Salviati’s sketch, but given to another artist.
Salviati’s original sketch (detail) from the Uffizi collection. (mid-1500s)
